Rattle growth, shedding & estimating age. the tail end of the shed “skin” from a rattlesnake is just an open tube that slips off over the rattle. if an adult rattlesnake’s rattle is damaged or deformed, i suppose old rattle segments could come off with the shed skin as the snake crawls out of it. timber rattlesnakes are known to. But for rattlesnakes, each time an old skin is shed, a new rattle is added. if rattlesnakes always shed their skin once, and only once, a year, you might actually be able to tell how old a rattlesnake was by counting the rattles, but they don’t.. The venom of timber rattlesnakes is so potent that it can kill a human. in reality, however, there are few reported cases of people being bitten by timber rattlesnakes. on their tail. each time the skin is shed, a new segment is added to the base of the tail. you'd think this means the rattle will grow longer and longer throughout a snake's.

If all goes well, youngsters grow rapidly. each time they come out of hibernation, they shed their skin, and with each skin shedding (molting) a new rattle appears. during the rapid growth of the. Adults shed their skin every one or two years, with the average being every 1.4 years. a new rattle segment is added each time shedding occurs. snakes with a complete set of rattles are rarely seen, however, since the rattles regularly break off..
